Cellular Phones and Internet access by GPRS

To use your cellphone in Moçambique the phone must:

1, Either have roaming enabled or,

2, Not be network locked and have a local SIM card installed.

There are two network operators in Moçambique, MCEL is wholly owned by the national telecomms supplier TDM which handles 70% of the traffic, and Vodacom, an offshoot of the SA Vodacom, which gets the other 30% and runs at an outrageous loss.

If you opt for international roaming you will be reached on your normal domestic phone number but you will pay through the nose for outgoing and incoming calls. You arrange roaming with your service provider and it takes 24 to 48 hours to put in place

If you buy a local 'pacote inicial' for 20MTn and some airtime cards you will have to send your temporary number to your SA callers. Local calls cost 8MTn per minute.

SMS is a very effective and convenient means of communicating from Moçambique. Every airtime card purchased in Moçambique comes with a number for free SMS's to all subscribers in Moçambique. International SMS's are charged for.

GPRS

Both the Mcel and Vodacom MZ networks have GPRS capability but only Vodacom MZ provides it on a pre-paid SIM card. To implement GPRS you will need a data card or a phone with GPRS capability.

GPRS from MCEL is only available if you have an account with them, which means conquering another bureaucratic nightmare.

Any Vodacom MZ SIM card can be enabled for GPRS by following instructions on the pack. The cost of GPRS from Vodacom MZ is 7MTn per megabyte.

GPRS is also available through an SA SIM card that has roaming enabled, but every roaming megabyte will cost more than R14

Be aware that Vodacom MZ views GPRS as a means to mop up spare capacity in their network, and you will be cut off any time that a telephone subscriber places a call. Expect huge frustration and very slow data transfers.
