Currency Info

The local currency for Moçambique is the Metical, however the South African Rand is accepted at garages and some shops. US Dollars can be changed at banks and some shops but are not accepted by most vendors. Euros can be sold at banks but are not the best currency to carry. Rands are the second currency of Moçambique but vendors are reluctant to accept Rand coins.

A credit card cannot be used to make any purchase at any shop or garage. You cannot buy fuel with a credit card.

See Bulletin Board for the current rate of exchange or sms 'Cambios BIM' to 821010. The BIM rate is not necessarily the best available and there is a 3.5% commission payable to the bank.

Meticais can be purchased from street vendors at border posts, banks, petrol stations and some Indian traders. Great care should be taken during these transactions. Currency purchased from banks in pre-banded packs should be counted before leaving the bank, as many of these packs have been found to contain fewer banknotes than the wrapper claims they contain. To be safe you should insist that the teller puts all your purchased currency through a counting machine, if there isn't one at the teller's station be very suspicious.

Casa Mirage in Xai Xai across the street from Handling is a good place to change money. The rate is usually better than BIM and they won't steal your money.

Credit cards are not widely accepted therefore, it is advisable to carry cash. ATM's are found at some petrol stations and banks and accept SA credit cards. Some ATM's cannot handle a PIN code of more then 4 digits. If you have a 5 digit PIN code in SA, change it to 4 digits before crossing the border. Up to R4000 can be drawn per day and the payout is in high denomination Metical bank notes. There is a service charge of about 5% for using the ATM.

There have been many cases of double debits being applied to the accounts of ATM users, mostly at BIM and Standard Bank. To date we are not aware of any person that has had such a double debit reversed. You will, therefore, be at the mercy of any bank that you entrust your card to. The Standard Bank will only pay your travellers cheques on collection, meaning that you get your money about 3 weeks after you hand them your TC's.
