Quad bikes: Not all quad bikes are equal. Some have insuperable problems climbing the steep dunes encountered at the beach and the soft sand in the area in general. Quads with a rear wheel o/d of 18" and engine sizes of 200cc and less have proved to be totally useless. There are no laws at present that restrict the use of quad bikes other than that no vehicles are allowed on the beaches without a permit, and minors are not allowed to operate. quads This theoretically allows quad bikers free access to the rest of the country. Monthly beach permits are available from the Maritime authority in Bilene. However, because of the abuse of this privilege by a section of the quad biking fraternity this freedom may soon be lost. Quad bikers stand accused of the following breaches of etiquette and common sense:
The people of Moçambique are losing patience with those South Africans who insist on behaving like animals whenever they visit this country, and the axe of revenge is about to fall on the neck of the quad biker. Be warned. The Indian Ocean beaches are virtually deserted from the Lagoon to the mouth of the Limpopo, a distance sufficient to satisfy to hardiest rider, and there are dunes that will makes the stoutest heart quake. The local authorities would like to make Nhabanga a quad-friendly place, but this can only happen if bikers self-regulate and eliminate the reckless and inconsiderate elements within their ranks. This idea does seem to be taking root. May it flourish. |
